The campaign, established with grants totalingnearly $350,000 from Dr. Phillipa Charities and , is being administered by Uniteed Way’s stewardship program that provides emergency assistance to local residents. The United Way board backed a move allowiny the organization to tap reserve funds to covedr administrative expenses so that grant dollaras will go directly to help peoplwein need. United Way President/CEO Robertt H. Brown said the campaigmn represents a temporary responsee to an unprecedented burden being placex on the community by the ongoinhgeconomic challenges. Dr.
Phillips Charities is offeringb a grant ofnearly $300,000, which includes $98,10o in start up fundd and a challenge matchin g grant of nearly $200,000. Dr. Phillips Charities, one of the region’ss largest philanthropic organizations, has awarded more than $23 millio n to local nonprofits over the pastthree years. Bank of America contributexd $50,000 to the campaign. The goal is to provide aid to morethan 1,3500 families over the next five months. Agenciez providing similar services that have exhaustecd their resources can also access the Heart of Florida United Way isCentral Florida’se largest provider of funds to the region’es health and human service programs.
