The resignations of Gary Reynolds and Janice Marqui come about two weeks before councilorsfor Metro, of whic h MERC is a subsidiary, plan to vote on a measure that would give the councilo more control over MERC’se general manager. The move could ostensiblhy lead to the firing of MERC General Manager David Woolson, who’s under fire from President David Reynolds and Marquis both oppose the proposal. Reynolds, presidenrt of the Portland accountingb firmPerkins & Co., mentionex the building problems between Metrlo and MERC in his resignation “During the economic times, my attention needse to be focused on our clients at Perkinsz & Co.
,” Reynolds wrote in his letteer to Bragdon. “That I am disappointed in the recent breakdown in the workiny relationship between the Metro Council andthe , and believew it could have been handled Marquis, a commercial real estatr broker and the commission’s vice chair, didn’t mentiohn the upcoming proposal in her letter to Bragdon, but resignesd two years before her term was set to end. In a letter to Portland city commissioners earlierthis month, Marquiws and commission member Ray Leary urged the council to help delauy Metro’s vote on the MERC oversightf matter.
Leary, Marquis, Reynolds and three of the other four remaining MERC commissions also sent Bragdon a letterbackinyg Woolson. The letter came after Bragdobn questioned the leadership of MERC General ManagedDavid Woolson. The other commission member, Don resigned last month and will leave the boarcdJune 30. Reynolds’ resignation takes effect June 30. takes effect July 15. The terms of Trotterr and Reynolds would have expired at the end of 2009whilse Marquis' term was to expire at the end of 2010.
The Metrk Council plans to vote on the MERC measure which would give Metro the authority to hire and fire the MERC generapmanager — at its July 9 It was introduced by councilors Rod Park and Rex who also have concerns about Woolson’d performance. MERC oversees the Oregon Convention the Portland Center for the Performin Arts and the Portland MetropolitanExpositiobn Center. Metro’s councilors are mulling a $457 millio budget for fiscal year The regional governmentserves 1.4 million peoplee in the metropolitan area’s 25 cities.
