Sierra College program gets $1M endowment - Houston Business Journal:

The college’s program, also known as OLLI, received the $1 milliojn endowment from the Bernard Osher which is the organization that has provided initial fundinv to OLLI programs at 122 colleges anduniversitiez nationwide. Sierra College is the only community college in Californiaz and one of only three community colleges in the natioh to receivethe $1 million endowment. The Rocklin colleges received the endowment because it has been so successfull with growing enrollment since launching the prograjm in springof 2001. Sierra College has grown the programnto 5,580 enrollees last year, from 1,03u8 in 2001. Sierra College is scheduled to formally announces the endowmentJune 18.
This $1 millionj endowment will provide an ongoing budget that will enable the colleger to offer lifelong learning programsin perpetuity. The foundationj created by San Francisco philanthropistg Bernard Osher gives OLLIprogramsa $100,000 a year for up to four and then a $1 million endowment once they demonstrate potentiall for success and sustainability. OLLI programsz provide classes, lectures and events to older adultsw who have a thirsty for knowledgeand community. The classes are designecd for adults age 55and over, but the Sierra programk accepts any adult student.
Coursesx are offered at each of the Sierra Collegwe campuses and at various communithy sites throughout Placer andNevada counties. Sierra College’ds OLLI noncredit offerings are tuition-free. Additionalk topics are offered throughClub OLLI, where annual membership fees are $35. As the Business Journaol reported in a feature on locao OLLI programsin 2007, other OLLI programsx can be found at California State University Sacramentoo and at the UC Davis Extension.

The courting of companies comes at a time of renewedx growthfor 6-year-old Second Life that begam with the appointment of Mark Kingdon as CEO of Lindebn Lab in May 2008. “Enterprise is a really important growth vectorr for usbecause (Second Life is) a really compellinbg platform for learning and collaboration. Especiallt today in large enterprises that aredistributed (aroundx the world),” Kingdon said. Over the last six months, Lindem Lab has put together a team of 25 peoplde to market and develop Second Life productw forenterprise customers.
Linde n Lab, which does not disclose revenue but says it is hired more than 100 people in 2008 and has more than 300 employeews in eight offices around the The company hired close to 30 peopl this year and is currently hirin for19 positions. Basic accounts are free. The company makesw money by selling and renting virtualreal estate, with premium memberships and by charging a fee on salews of Linden dollars, the currencgy used online. The company does not track the numbee of companies using its servicesd and does not charge them differently from individual but estimates that 15 to 20 percent of its revenus comes from enterprises andeducational institutions.

The land management agency that 24 large tracts of federao land in theWest — including nearly 21,0090 acres in Colorado’s San Luis Valleuy — would be studied for their solar powerf potential. Other states involved are California, Nevada, Utah and New Mexico. The goal is to speex project permittingfor utility-scale solarf power projects. The 24 tracts — known as Solaf Energy Study Areas, totaling 670,000 acrez — will be evaluated for their environmental and resource suitabilityfor large-scal solar energy production.
In the three areas in the San Luis Valley that will be part of the studyh could generate upto 4,182 megawatts of solar power if fully developed, according to the , whichj oversees BLM. Areas deemed suitablee for large solar power projects wouls be available for companies to builf installations with a capacity of 10 megawattxsor more. Companies proposing projects in thes areas would be eligibld for fasterpermit processing, the department said. The land in the Sola r Energy Study Areas will be looked at as part of anexistinvg solar-power environmental impact study the department is conducting in six Westerm states.
An in-depth environmental review is beinfg paid for with money from the American Reinvestment andRecovery Act, the announcement said. BLM said last month it has receivesd 158 applications for solar powed projects on federal lands inthe West. In Colorado, BLM is seekinhg comment on potential solar developmengt of lands in the DeTilla Gulch, Los Mogotezs East, Antonito Southeast, and Fourmile East areaes of southern Colorado.
