Study: Climate change could cause $12 billion in damage in the Houston/Galveston area - Houston Business Journal:

azajir.wordpress.com
The finding comes three days after a study found thatCorpus Christi’sd infrastructure will also be affected by climatr change. “The Socio-Economic Impact of Sea Levep Rise in the GalvestonBay Region,” commissione d by the and the British Consulate-Generall Houston, estimates that 78 percenr of households will be displaced in Galveston County. A more aggressivde sea level rise could displace 93 percenrtof households, according to the study. “Climate change is said David Yoskowitz, co-author of the reporf and a professor atTexas A&M University-Corpus Christi.
“I is not a hypothetical, it is a Sea-level rise is occurring in Galvestonm Bay as well as around the Gulf of this isanother fact. “We need to consided the socio-economic impact of these changes and begin totake long-termn sustainable action to get a handle on the risintg sea around Galveston in order to protect the region’s future.” Galveston, Harris and Chambera counties were examined in the study, which used an economic model to assessa the impact of both conservative and aggressivwe sea level rise estimates over the next 100 yeare on households, buildings, industrial and hazardouw material sites and water treatmentx plants.
Under both scenarios, at least 23 public facilities and industrialo sites wouldbe impacted. “If we take the very conservative estimates ofa 0.69 meter sea level rise in the next 100 year for Galveston, an Ike-level storm would be estimatedd to cause an additional $1.7 billionm in damage due to floodinvg for the three-county region surrounding Galveston Bay, given the economifc conditions of today,” Yoskowitz “To put that figure in perspective, it would equate to the mediam income for almost 36,000 Texas households.
