Rockville-based Neuralstem (AMEX: CUR) announced Thursday that it had been grantede a patent on four new chemical entities that boost the generation ofnew neurons. The company’s patent titled “Use of Fused Nicotinamides to Promotew Neurogenesis,” claims four chemical entities and any pharmaceutical compositiohincluding them. “The ability to promotre neurogenesis — the birth of new neurons in the adulytbrain — has recently been a focus of intense researcj by scientists and pharmaceutical companies worldwide, said Neuralstem CEO Richardr Garr.
“These four compounds, with potenty demonstrated neurogenic activity were discoveredentirely in-housd and are owned by the Company. These are the only drugx we are aware of with the demonstrated ability to stimulate neurogenesias of normal adultbrain cells." Neuralstem expectds to be in a Phase I safeth trials for treatment of majot depression with the lead compound from the four-chemical groupp by early next The company also expects to be testing compounds for traumatic brain injury and othere major indications.
